Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, History, and Community

Every year on June 19th, Americans recognize Juneteenth, an important day in United States history that commemorates freedom, resilience, and progress.

At Malley Electric, we believe it is important to recognize the moments in history that helped shape our communities and our nation. Juneteenth is a time for reflection, education, unity, and appreciation for the continued progress toward equality and opportunity for all.

The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced that all enslaved people were free.

This historic moment became known as:

  • Juneteenth
  • Freedom Day
  • Emancipation Day
  • Jubilee Day

Juneteenth has been celebrated for generations through gatherings, education, music, prayer, and community events.

In 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States.

Why Juneteenth Matters
